Workshop Title: Using Glogster in the Middle School ELA Classroom


Day: 7


Subject of the Day's Workshop:

To develop knowledge and application of an interactive poster tool Glogster, to promote collaboration, literacy skills, and critical thinking development within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  1. Basic knowledge of Glogster operations.

Content:

Glogster is an application that allows students and teachers to create interactive posters that house multimedia such as images, musics, graphics, video, audio, etc. Within this workshop, participants will explore how Glogster can be utilized in the middle school English Language Arts classroom to promote collaboration, literacy skills, and critical thinking by allowing students to create. In addition, teachers will examine how the development of a Glog can house a learning experience for students within and outside of the classroom by embedding it. Participants will conclude this session of the workshop by creating two Glogs, one that can house a learning experience for students and another that requires students to work in collaborative groups to create a Glog to demonstrate learning in addition to completing an evaluation.

Objectives of the Lesson:

By the end of Day 7, participants will be able to:
  1. Possess a larger understanding of the various operations within Glogster.
  2. Recognize, understand, and apply various ways that Glogster can be utilized in the middle school English Language Arts classroom.
  3. Transform teaching practices through the use of Glogster focusing on examination of how glogs promote literacy development, collaboration, and critical thinking within the middle school English Language Arts classroom.
  4. Create and develop activities that utilize glogs within the middle school English Language Arts classroom and at home.
  5. Engage in self evaluation and workshop evaluation.

Lesson Format:

  1. Brief question and answer session to address lingering questions from participants regarding information from Day 6.
  2. Facilitator will lead a quick review of various functions within Glogster. Participants will interact with demonstration by creating a Bubbl that will be utilized for the workshop.
  3. Collaborative Activity: Using Glogster, groups will create a glog based upon the theme of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. The glog must include a variety of multimedia and be a springboard to support theme and historical aspects of the novel. Once completed, groups will embed completed glog into training wiki for viewing and discussion.
  4. Collaborative Activity: Groups will create a collaborative scrapbook poster to examine how multimedia can support literacy, collaboration, and critical thinking. As a group, participants will come up with a collective theme and create a various elements within the glog that are representative of each person in the group. Groups will embed completed glogs within the training wiki for viewing and discussion.
  5. Planning time: Participants will be able to develop and create two Glogster activities based upon current classroom topics that will be implemented in the classroom for student use (one to hold a lesson for students and one for students where they collaboratively create. Facilitator will be able to meet individually with participants during this time to aid in development or answer questions.
  6. Self and Workshop Day Evaluation.

Additional Materials and How They will be Used:

Glogster Web 2.0: Will be used to support how glogs can be utilized in the middle school English Language Arts classroom. In addition participants will be able to access tutorial videos if needed.

Glogster Articles: Will be used as additional resources to examine how Glogster supports literacy, collaboration, and critical thinking skills.
